Jenene Nagy talks about her new role as Disjecta's curator-in-residence. by Matt Stangel IT'S BEEN A BIG YEAR for local artist and curator Jenene Nagy. She kicked things off in January with her solo show at Disjecta, Tidal, then followed up with an installation in the biennial Portland2010. In the months after Portland2010, Nagy prepared for a June-through-August residency at Raid Projects in Los Angeles, which is now coming to a close. In this whirlwind of activity, Nagy's curatorial ambitions were left on the back burner. (From 2006-2008, Nagy served as co-curator of Tilt Gallery and Project Space.) But after more than a year of curatorial silence, Disjecta announced last week that Nagy has been appointed their 2011-2012 curator-in-residence. I emailed Nagy a few questions about her upcoming Disjecta programming. While she wasn't able to reveal many details, she gave some clues as to where things are headed for Disjecta's next season. MERCURY: How did the opportunity to jump in as curator-in-residence at Disjecta come about? JENENE NAGY: Well, I didn't jump in, I was appointed by the board. Meagan Atiyeh and Bryan Suereth had both been familiar with the programming at TILT and when I decided to stay in Portland for at least another year (instead of staying in LA), they asked me if I was interested in the position. Curator-in-residence is a new program Disjecta is establishing as a way to continue offering a range of creative opportunities. It will be a pl...

A little guide for your e-ve-ning. The much-missed Tilt Gallery and Project Space helmed by Jenene Nagy and Josh Smith never really went away, it just went dormant, plotting future exhibitions. Tonight, they launch Tilt Export, a curatorial effort in various spaces that opens with "approximate" at  Gallery HOMELAND (2505 ...

Ethan Rose and Damien Gilley collaborate on the site-specific Approximate. by John Motley This month, TILT Export—the roving curatorial project Josh Smith and Jenene Nagy launched after closing Tilt Gallery and Project Space—has transformed galleryHOMELAND into a funhouse of sensory second-guessing. If the gallery's ad hoc space within the Ford Building has posed challenges for exhibiting conventional work, those artists who have worked with the building's idiosyncrasies have fared much better. With Approximate, a truly site-specific collaboration between sound artist Ethan Rose and the currently ubiquitous Damien Gilley, the artists have taken the...">

Jesse Hayward at Tilt
Jesse Hayward

For the month of January, Tilt exhibits Jesse Hayward's One None Done. Hayward's work combines the sculptural with the painterly and drawn, blurring boundaries and lending a "heightened leeway" to form and color. The site-specific installation creates "sweeps of gesture" throughout the space.

Heidi Schwegler, "Utopia Sighs"

This weekend, Tilt Gallery and Project Space will exhibit Utopia Sighs, a project featuring sculpture, video, live performance, and sound by Heidi Schwegler. In collaboration with balloon artist Kelvin Chun, Schwegler will present a one night only performance exploring the "delight, chaos and inescapable trauma of the toddler's party." Don't miss this special event, as Tilt will only be open this one night for the month of August.
