I went to Taste of Mexico (NW 21st and Irving) tonight for dinner and was amazingly underwhelmed. I ordered the vegetarian fajitas and they came out with barely seasoned mixed (tasted like previously frozen) vegetables. Cauliflower? Carrots? Zucchini? Um, I do not think that these vegetables belong in fajitas.
They did have good homemade chips, though.

Well, I'm afraid to write this because word will get out, as we love having this restaurant as our own special secret, but it's time for "A Taste of Mexico" at 716 NW 21st Avenue in Portland to get noticed. I can't speak for any of the meat entrees, but it boasts some really amazing vegetarian dishes.
Special favorites include
- A vegetarian tostada -- the lightest and crispiest and freshest tostada I've ever tasted! Vegetarian refried beans, spanish rice, lettuce, sour cream and more layered to mouth-watering perfection.
- Vegetarian enchilades with mole sauce -- this mole sauce is the most flavorful and amazing sauce I could ever imagine. Never in my life have I closed my eyes and relished the flavor of anything -- but this mole sauce is not to be missed!
- Salads portions are generous and everything is amazingly fresh and delicious looking
- Presentation is always perfect
We spoke tonight with the owner, Salvador, who told us that he's thinking of creating a completely separate vegetarian menu. His current menu is marked with a special icon for vegetarian items. The dinner entree menu is sadly lacking in vegetarian items, however, you can ask for a lunch menu and order anything off that menu for some vegetarian main dishes, and he's happy to create something to your liking.
