When Katy Davidson is making music, I want to hear it. Whether it's as Dear Nora, Lloyd & Michael with Marianna Ritchey or in her new band/solo project, Key Losers, Davidson has a knack for writing moving melodies and thoughtful lyrics?capable of humor, profundity and just plain poetry, she's just one of my favorite songwriters [...]

One Color Scout Books by States Rights Records
The fine citizenry at States Rights Records have released their very own Scout Book duet! States Rights is a Portland-based music label that defies categorization, preferring to release and promote "rad music" regardless of genre. Dec 8, 2009Portland Mercury

In September we blogged about Wieden+Kennedy's "Don't Move Here: Inside Portland's Music Scene" video series*, so let's check back in on them, shall we?
Previously we just had the trailer, but now two full episodes of "Don't Move Here" are posted—not embeddable!—on WK's site. Episode #1 features a chat with States Rights Records, the Artistery, and a live performance from Explode into Colors. About time that band gets some publicity. Episode #2 has interviews with poster artists Mike King and Guy Burwell, a trip to the Audio Dregs office, and live performance courtesy of Atole.
*Conflict of interest pony demands that we mention a freelancer of ours, Ava Hegedus, is the "Content Producer" of these videos. So there.

(REVIEW) Local mail-order label States Rights asks artists to get shameful.
[GUILTY PLEASURES] Grown Zone?the third of States Rights' "Zone" compilations?is positively overwhelming. Topping out at 150 minutes, the two-disc comp features 36 artists who've come together to musically confront their "shameful" influences. (The comp is alternately called "Groan Zone.") Some of the artists showcased are significant Portland underground names: Valet, White Rainbow, YACHT (who finally [...]

Nilina Mason-Campbell reports from the PdxPopNow! show last night:
I was a bit surprised that Fist Fite opened the PDX Pop Now! CD release show last night at 9:25, but maybe it was so drummer Christian Carmine could still make it to work on time as he works [...]
