the cutest little sign in the Pearl.
Still need to go here...it was closed when I passed by last....
It's funny, I don't go to the downtown/Pearl district a lot-but have been there 4 times this week!

Caffè Umbria appeared on the scene a few months ago, with all the flash and glamour you'd expect for a major restaurant opening. Getting through the door and fighting my way through the mob, it was hard to believe all of this fuss was for yet another coffeehouse.

This new cafe is in the Casey Building, at the corner of NW 12th and Everett St (Across from Everett St. Bistro). They put a lot of thought into the design and it shows; black granite counters, new glass display cases, both stand up and sit down tables, and high quality fixtures throughout. According to one of the employees, many of the design elements were shipped over from Italy. Every detail has a slick "planned" feel. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It fits the neighborhood, and is the only coffee house I can think of in the Pearl District, that isn't part of a huge corporate conglomerate. I can't imagine how much money they spent on the build-out, but rumor on the street, is they are paying upwards of $38 dollars a square foot.

I have to disagree with Dude about Umbria being "the only coffee house I can think of in the Pearl District, that isn't part of a huge corporate conglomerate". Urban Grind, World Cup, Cafe Allora, Sip & Kranz...

Change is the one constant thing in the Pearl's retail landscape. There are two closures to report: Urban Wineworks closed its tasting room on March 5, and held a giant liquidation sale this past weekend as a last hurrah. The tasting room was closed due to economic conditions, but Bishop Creek Cellars Winery lives on—in a different capacity, of course. According to the website, the winery will continue to produce its award winning wines, and will also continue its wine club. Bishop Creek wines are still available through the website and phone orders, and the wines can still be found on select Portland wine lists. Becca Smith recently announced her intent to close Cheeky B. The last day is March 27, and Smith is selling everything down to the fixtures. I've always admired Smith's plucky attitude and I know that she will be a raging success on any path she chooses. We wish the best to the employees and owners of both businesses.

As existing Pearl retailers and restaurants define their new normal, other folks continue to open new businesses. Chow, a breakfast and lunch cafe, has opened at 505 NW 14th Avenue in the former home of Get Bento. ...

My friend Ansley emailed me about the Tap Project today. What a great idea!

Here's a list of Portland restaurants participating. Let's give them our business this next week and raise some money for clean drinking water!

May 15, 2009Table Talk

It was early this morning when I arrived at Barista, a tiny gem of a coffehouse in the lobby of the Gadsby Building on NW 13th Street in the Pearl District. The normally buzzing neighborhood was still pretty sleepy, and so was I, so coffee was in order.

I'd been meaning to visit Barista for ages. I'd pinned the NW Examiner's blurp about it to my desk's Wall 'o GottaGetThere, right above my tape dispenser and the picture of a lecherous leprechaun that my coworker Rob drew for my St. Patrick's Day cards this year.

A reader asks...
"I have a "burning" issue for Pearl dogs and their humans---where can we go with our dogs and get coffee?? The Pearl needs a coffee walk-up window! I have a 4 month old pug puppy and I do not want to tie him up to go inside somewhere to get coffee. I tried carrying him in Starbucks and they had a fit. I prefer the local places like Via Delizia and Sip and Kranz, but neither was open that morning (I was out early). Anyway, I just emailed Sip and Kranz about what their dog policy is and whether they would consider a walk-up window or not. I think it's a great idea--what do you think? Or do you know of any dog-friendly (inside) coffee-serving establishments in the Pearl?"

Before I could 'sniff around' for answers, the reader wrote back:

" I got a response from Sip and Kranz! They said dogs aren't allowed for the most part but they make exceptions--they have regulars who bring theirs in, as long as the dog stays next to the owners' feet or the owner is carrying him/her. Sounds good to me. Hooray for Sip and Kranz! (or maybe I should say Arf!)"
