Location: Pioneer Courthouse Square - Downtown Portland Description: Shelly's Garden, another name for Honkin' Huge Burritos has been serving up some of the best burritos in Portland for 17 years. I remember when I was in my last year of school coming down for an anti-war protest and trying one of her gems. [...]

'Tis the season to have an abundance of fruits and vegetables when you belong to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). For the past two weeks we've had a box of goodness dropped on our front porch, delivered via Organics To You. Opening the box and discovering what's inside is kinda like Christmas.

So why do CSA? It's a great motivator to base our meals around fresh produce rather than starches or meats. The pressure of consuming all of these vegetables and fruits is a good one. It also means stretching my comfort zone and familiarity: it's not until I first started doing a CSA 3 years ago that I learned how to cook greens like kale. And this week's box had a strange looking vegetable I discovered was celeriac. (I can't wait to photograph it for you: expect a future post about it.) And the price is pretty darn good. These are all organic, and most are local. Buying direct means our dollars go back to the local farmers, and keeping our money in the local market is an important thing to do right now while the economy is so whacked. Supporting local farms is important to us and how we live in the world. Speaking of local farms, if you haven't seen The Real Dirt on Farmer John...

805 So, this'll paint me as a naïf, I'm sure, or at least a curmudgeon a little advanced for his age, but I just got a whiff of the punditgasm (and don't that paint a word picture) over the introduction of Microsoft®?© Silverlight®?©.

Mama always said "When they say they're rebooting the web, it's time to worry."

Well, she didn't. Not really. Maybe your mama. Anyway.

The upside is that the plugin seems to work with Firefox 2.0 and Mac OS X (and I can uninstall it if it munges things up). I loaded it up (while reading the FAQ which is just loaded with whalesong-and-joss-stick verbiage), restarted the Fox and loaded up the Silverlight page...and got an honkin' huge embedded movie in a webpage.

Wow. Nobody's ever thought of that one before. Good one!

Microsoft: Just when you thought it was safe to go on the 'web, we reinvented it...as far as you're concerned.

Today I picked up Chela and the two of us headed out for a day together. I had my trusty Spanish/English dictionary in my purse, which I used a lot. Chela speaks only two words of English: "Hello" and "Thank you." (I guess, technically, that's three) My Spanish is basic survival Spanish at best, and I'm not sure it would even guarantee my survival if it came to that. But somehow we do manage to communicate.
Our first stop was Thinker Toys in Multnomah Village. I had gotten a pair of those wonderful Robeez baby shoes for Chela to take to her other grandbaby back in Ecuador. She saw Sofia's and loved them, but we decided the ones I got needed to be bigger, so we went back to exchange them. Chela enjoyed looking around this cheerfully chaotic toy store and was quite blown away by the $100 price tag on a beautiful doll.

Our main destination was Fabric Depot, way on the other side of Portland. It used to bill itself as the largest fabric store in the US. I notice now they claim only to be the largest fabric store in the West...
