In art, maybe 80 is the new 21
If you've ever asked yourself, "What kind of art will I make when I'm 80?" Robert A. Nelson's show at Beppu Wiarda Gallery this month has the answer: whatever you flaming well want.
The former teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago is clearly having fun at 82. His new works are narrative pitched just this side of total surrealism, based on history as well as fairy tales.
For instance, in "The Burger King Surrenders London to the Romans" a bunch of Caesar's flabby officers accept the surrender of some diminutive cheeseburgers. The architecture in the background dissolves into blueprints, while numerous tiny details keep your eyes working as you dip in and out of the composition and the possible story.
