Holocene Music

Since opening in the summer of 2003, Portland, Oregon?s Holocene club has quickly established itself as a focus point for the city?s burgeoning music and arts communities.

Growing alongside a musical evolution that eschews genre boundaries in pursuit of new and exciting fusions, Holocene has evolved into a carefully curated mix of local and touring bands, DJs, laptop musicians, multimedia art events, and everything in-between.

Now Holocene has taken next logical step in its role as supportive home base and active participant in this movement, creating Holocene Music, a record label devoted to fostering boundary-pushing musical talent regardless of genre and geographical lines.

Laura Gibson should be a familiar name to fans of the Portland music scene. Her 2006 debut, If You Come To Greet Me, received accolades from both The New York Times and NPR, and this young singer/songwriter has made appearances on opbmusic's In House and Live Wire.

Nov 10, 2008Local Cut - a Willamette Week production
When I was a kid I was scared of Oaks Park. It was just too much to take in?carnies, fast rides, bits of cotton candy floating aimlessly throw the air. It wasn't until much later that I discovered that the park was, in actuality, kind of a small, run-down, dump; a relic from another era. [...]

I left the office for lunch today. I know, I know, pity the martyr. But we've been busy 'round these parts, and it's easy to forget just how gorgeous the weather is in September when your face is permanently glued to a computer screen. So instead of eating my leftover pasta and updating my Google [...]

Here's the story on She Keeps Bees and why they appear here on the Moose. An envelope leaves Brooklyn postmarked November 29th. It's addressed to Holocene Music, att: music submissions and the address is the Nemo Design/Moose address because Scott and Matt who ran Holocene Music had an office here at Nemo Design. These days [...]

Swan Island, to the best of our knowledge Portland's only all-female dance-metal queercore outfit, is throwing in the towel, Holocene Records' Scott McLean notified us via email yesterday. While we've yet to see a press-release or hear an official comment from the band, McLean's email said that the band is going on "indefinite hiatus," and that its show at Holocene (the venue) this Thursday will be Swan Island's final appearance. Thursday's show is the Double Double Video Video Premier Premier (I can't believe they got me to type that) with the Shaky Hands?both bands have new videos out that are being premiered at Holocene, hence the event's dizzying name. I won't try to write a proper obituary for Swan Island until we determine the cause of death, but I will shamelessly link you over to a piece I wrote for WW when the band was just kids: Hop in the way-back machine and travel back to 2006, when Swan Island had just placed third in WW's annual (and prestigious!) Best New Band poll. If that's not enough Swan Island action for you, here's the video for "Crumble," from the 2006 debut album The Centre Will Hold. Rumor has it that the new video (for the excellent "Night Owl," off the same album) is a bit more professional-looking, but we love this one. Goodnight, Swan Island: Links: Swan IslandSpace Holocene Music Holocene (the venue), with more show information. Photo courtesy of the Swans.

The Shaky Hands have released some information and artwork (If you can decipher that rorschach-esque cover art?you win a prize!) on their upcoming full-length Lunglight, which will be released on Holocene Music and Kill Rock Stars. A band so big that they need two labels.

Supposedly "slightly darker" than the stoner summertime pop of their self-titled debut, Lunglight will hit the streets on September 9th. Full press release (my favorite line: "Mayhaw Hoons? wildly swinging curly red hair") and track listing are below. Can't wait...

End Hits: Oh, I think I see what the image is, it's a spider with a parachute, right? What do I win?

So first, we're incredibly happy to be putting out the next Ethan Rose album. We've been huge fans of Ethan's music for a long time now, so it's really an honor. The album comes out January 27th and it is truly wonderful. Here's an MP3 of the first track. Which leads [...]

How incredibly awesome is this? Sholi's mind-blowing cover of Iranian pop diva Googoosh's song "Hejrat" (which, you'll remember, we released on 7″) is included on the CD that accompanies this year's Believer Music Issue, on stands now. What's more, Googoosh herself is also included on the disc AND pictured on the cover (shown [...]
